Old Rail Path (North) @ Rail Corridor
Woke up a bit late and arrived at Rail Mall carpark around 715am. The plan was to walk / jog from here until Kranji side via the rail corridor…ending at the Rainbow bridge. From there we planned to take a bus back to rail mall (about 25mm ride) and end our excursion with breakfast.
I tried this route 2 days ago but that was disrupted by heavy downpour almost midway. Sunny clear day today!
The entrance to the rail path at this time could only be accessed north of Hillview mrt. The path looks like is undergoing some sort of upgrade with new topsoil and grass. Likely once this settled in coming months it will be a proper “path”. This continued until junction 10 mall; instead of going into cck park connector, we accessed the rail path via the heavy vehicle carpark right after the mall.
This joins to a path beside a huge monsoon drain with new HDBs on the other side. The trail becomes more interesting from Stagmon Ring road onwards as we were flanked with tall shrubbery and the occasional old trees. Got a bit muddy after the sungai Kadut ave crossing. We saw a rotting wild boar…the stench was quite strong as we passed the loud buzzing of flies. Not a good experience. Plodding along, due the daily downpour this place leading up to Kranji Close road was muddy.
Crossed the junction to the path that leads towards the bridge. Quite a nice path actually. We were excited at the sight of the bridge but access was closed! Despite our puppy eye manoeuvre the guards were adamant that they could not let us pass. Apparently only open between 5pm and 7am. This keeps changing so beware.
Instead backtracking 1.5km we sidetracked towards some construction path, climb a fence to Kranji Loop. The place was desolated. Grabbed back to our starting destination!
Quick thoughts :
- can be accessed via Hillview MRT just down the road from Rail Mall
- carpark on Sunday was full at 930am - pretty crowded!
- going via cck park connector is also possible but make sure to crossover the drain to join to the rail path. There’s a toilet point at the cck park connector right under the KJE. If I’m not wrong there’s a bridge here.
- bring sufficient hydration and snacks. It’s a 2hr plus walk, effective distance around 9.8km. You can take a cab/grab or bus back from the main road.
- lots of food choices to choose from at Rail Mall. There’s a decent supermarket there as well.
